Apple Celebration

Thanks for all the wonderful apple things sent in today!  The kids had so much fun.  You would have thought that they had never seen apples before.  Some where in the middle of the eating, the whole class broke out into "Happy Birthday, Johnny Appleseed".  It was heart warming to see them so engaged.  They were all talking about all the things they learned during the folktale unit.  Then the icing on the cake was when I told them we were starting a unit on Ben Franklin next week everyone cheered!

Other things we did this week:
* We have started our unit on place value in math.  The students are doing really well understanding 45 is 4 tens and 5 ones.  However, we are still working on understanding why it works.  Here is a link to fun brain.  The game is a little harder than what we are covering but still good.  http://www.funbrain.com/tens/index.html

* In reading we are working on fluency.  The students laughed listening to me read slow, choppy, and with funny voices.  Remind them at home that fluency is more than reading fast!

* In word work we are focusing on plural and singular nouns.  Everyone is doing great with identifying them.  We are going to continue to practice using with correct verb agreement.  You can help them at home by correcting their speech patterns.  If they say it wrong, they will write it wrong!! Great game: http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/basketball/index.html   Here is a great game to cover pronouns (we will be covering these next week): http://www.ezschool.com/Games/Pronouns.html

* Speaking of writing: What great stories!!  The students complete a scarecrow glyph in math and then wrote a fiction story about a scarecrow.  Some of them are really funny.  :)
